New museum will explore Kahlo’s origin story

Museo Casa Kahlo, a new museum dedicated to the artist Frida Kahlo‘s life and work, is due to open this autumn in Coyoacán, Mexico City.

Per the New York Times, the museum is designed in part by Rockwell Group and will be located at Casa Roja, a private residence bought by Kahlo’s parents and handed down to the artist and her sisters.

The museum will be adjacent to the existing Museo Frida Kahlo (also known as Casa Azul), which is located in the home where Kahlo lived for most of her life.

Museo Casa Kahlo to open this year

The Frida Kahlo Museum tells the story of the artist’s life with her husband Diego Rivera, while the new museum will explore Kahlo’s origin story.

Adán García Fajardo, who is currently the academic director at the Museum of Memory and Tolerance in Mexico City, will serve as director of Museo Casa Kahlo.

Via Vogue, Museo Casa Kahlo will display personal items that have never gone on view before, including letters, childhood photographs, dolls, jewellery, clothing, and Kahlo’s first-ever oil painting.

Casa Roja was given to the museum by Mara Romeo Kahlo, the artist’s grandniece, and her closest living relative and heir.

“This is a dream long held by our family,” said Romeo.

“Frida’s legacy belongs to the world, but it begins here – on this land, in these homes, and in the culture that shaped her. Museo Casa Kahlo will allow us to tell new stories, share family secrets, host new voices, and build a future that honors her spirit.”

The development, opening and stewardship of the museum will be overseen by Fundación Kahlo, a new nonprofit organisation based in New York City and established by the Kahlo family.

The public opening of Museo Casa Kahlo will take place on 27 September.
