Science Museum Launches Digital Lab with Samsung

The Science Museum London has launched the Digital Lab to look at how museums can fulfil their missions in the digital age.

The Digital Lab will explore new technologies through short term projects which will seek to enhance the visitor experience.

The first three projects have been developed in partnership with Samsung as part of their support for the Mathematics: The Winton Gallery at the Science Museum.

Virtual Reality Experience

Using Samsung’s Gear VR headsets to bring objects to life.

Enhanced digitisation

Enhanced digitisation of key objects to bring collections to an online audience.

Open data and hackdays at the Science Museum

Exploring how to other users can engage with content via the publication of datasets online and two hackdays for designers, programmers and technologists.

It is important that the Science Museum explores the potential of digital to engage audiences with the Museum’s collections

John Stack, Digital Director at the Science Museum, said, “The Digital Lab will build on the Science Museum’s long history of digital innovation and enable us to remain at the forefront of use of new technologies within the cultural sector. Digital technologies and our audience’s use of digital continue to evolve rapidly. It is important that the Science Museum explores the potential of digital to engage audiences with the Museum’s collections and the important stories that they tell, and we are delighted to be working with Samsung to make the first of many Digital Lab projects possible.”
