India's Art & Photography Foundation has announced it is expanding the Museum of Art & Photography in Bengaluru and developing a new sculpture park in the Nilgiri Mountains.

Starting with the Museum of Art & Photography, the expansion on an adjacent site will feature new public spaces, including an enhanced conservation laboratory, gallery areas, facilities for children, and a makers space.

"Bengaluru, sometimes known as ‘India’s Silicon Valley’, is the engine of innovation in India," said Abhishek Poddar, founder of the Museum of Art & Photography.

"As a youthful organisation in a young city, the foundation has taken a bold approach, pioneering new ideas, seeking out new audiences, all with the aim of inspiring and blazing a trail for the creative spirit in all of us."

The project has been launched in response to the museum's growing collection of more than 60,000 objects and increasing attendance, with more than 100,000 visitors a year.

It is being supervised by leading Indian architect Rahul Mehrotra, founder of RMA Architects.

The Museum of Art & Photography started as an online experience in 2021, opening in its current building in Bengaluru in 2023 as the first major new museum to debut in South India this century.

As for the sculpture park, designs for the 240-acre attraction are being developed under the direction of Mehrotra, and master planned by Mumbai-based Opolis Architects.

The sculpture park will be located in Coonoor in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu, known for its tea estates in the surrounding Nilgiri hills, and part of India’s first UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.
