TheShanghai Museum is preparing to expand into Pudong New Area to meet popular demand, reports thepaper.cn and China News.
The 100, 000 square meter extension on the west side of Shanghai Science & Technology Museumis set to be open by 2020. The new division will focus on ancient Chinese arts and local Shanghai culture and arts.
Museum director Yang Zhigang said, "On weekends and holidays, I always noticed long lines outside the entrances of Shanghai Museum. We had to limit the number of visitors per day below 8, 000, and therefore many people were kept out.
"To meet the growing demand of local citizens, building a new museum is of great necessity for Shanghai."
