Weiss/Manfredi Architecture/Landscape/Urbanism is leading a $68m expansion project at the Tampa Museum of Art in downtown Tampa, Florida.

Earlier this year, the museum revealed plans for a renovation of the existing building, with work starting in June and a completion date scheduled for July 2022.

The expansion, scheduled to complete in 2024, will include site redevelopment. It will add around 51,000 square feet of new space along the Hillsborough River to the 25,000-square-foot renovation.

Weiss/Manfredi Architecture/Landscape/Urbanism is designing the expansion and the current renovation, which will double the museum’s exhibition spaces and triple its education spaces.

The expansion includes constructing a four-storey building that connects to the existing building, significantly enhancing the visitor experience at the Tampa Museum of Art.

“We are inspired by the potential of the Tampa Museum of Art renovation and expansion to create a dynamic and inviting community destination and are thrilled to continue working with the Tampa Museum of Art to realize this extraordinary vision,” said Marion Weiss and Michael Manfredi.

Event space at the museum will be tripled from 7,200 to 25,600 square feet, while exhibition and collection space will increase from 14,800 square feet to more than 43,000 square feet.

Education space will grow from 1,400 square feet to more than 12,000 square feet. The renovations involve adding a new education wing with four classrooms.

Additionally, the expansion includes a new auditorium, an art lounge, and a rooftop events venue. The renovations will enhance the guest experience, offering five additional galleries, a renovated sculpture gallery and a flexible multimedia gallery space.

The Tampa Museum of Art’s surrounding site will offer new landscapes and public terraces. Construction of the expansion will begin in 2022 and will be completed in 2024.

“This is a transformational project for Tampa and the wider region,” said Michael Tomor, the Penny and Jeff Vinik executive director at the Tampa Museum of Art.

“After announcing our renovation earlier this year, our board and community stepped up to allow the museum to grow even further, providing overwhelmingly generous support for our community partnerships and expanded education programs.”
