The Shipping Monster, a provider of logistics and transportation to touring exhibitions, attractions and the entertainment industry, will be attending the upcoming Museums + Heritage Show in London, where CEO Robert Aspinall will lead a free panel entitled Not Just a Fairytale: Achieving Carbon Neutrality in Travelling Exhibitions.
Aspinall will be joined by Andrew Stramentov, CEO and founder of Rokbox and Lee Cavaliere, curator and art director at VOMA (Virtual Online Museum of Art), for a discussion about how to minimise the carbon footprint of a travelling exhibition, and how this doesn’t just start at the loading dock. Planning for a carbon-neutral travelling exhibition starts months, or even years, earlier, at the exhibition designer’s desk.
Small decisions have a big impact
Small design and fabrication decisions can have a huge impact on an exhibit’s carbon footprint and ease of transportation from one location to another.
For instance, it might be necessary to modify and then repair a component that is just an inch bigger or taller than the sea container. These seemingly insignificant expenses build up to more fuel used, more single-use containers used, shorter exhibit lifespans, and a greater demand for new fabrication (and shipment). All of these affect the institution’s overall budget as well as its environmental impact and offset needs.
The panel discussion will look at these strategies from three perspectives: logistical, institutional, and production.
Aspinall will moderate the discussion and talk about how The Shipping Monster uses environmentally effective shipping practices to bring down costs. Stramentov will explore the use of sustainable materials in packaging and how this supports institutional green goals through recycling, waste reduction, and carbon offsets. Cavaliere will discuss the goals and exhibits of VOMA, the first digital museum.
Attendees will see examples, techniques, and metrics from the real world, which they can apply to their work. All three speakers have extensive knowledge and practical tips.
“I am thrilled to be leading this important discussion with two of the finest gentlemen that I have the pleasure of knowing,” says Aspinall. “We are all excited to be together at this event, and to share our combined knowledge of practical applications that are making a real difference in the sustainability arena.”
