Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum announces new museum in Eindhoven

The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam has unveiled plans for a new branch in Eindhoven in the southern Netherlands.

Situated in a new park on the banks of the Dommel River, the new museum will display artworks from the iconic Rijksmuseum collection.

It is described as a vibrant and dynamic space "with the unmistakable character of the Rijksmuseum".

The Rijksmuseum collection includes more than one million objects and artworks, including masterpieces by Rembrandt, Vermeer, and more.

The new building will cover more than 3,500 square metres, and detailed plans will be developed over the coming year.

Rijksmuseum aims to open its new site in Eindhoven in six to eight years, according to a press release.

Taco Dibbits, general director of the Rijksmuseum, said the museum "is always seeking new ways to share the collection with people across the Netherlands".

Rijksmuseum expansion

He added, "The Rijksmuseum in Eindhoven represents an important step in making the collection even more accessible in the south of the country."

The establishment of the new Rijksmuseum will be made possible through support from the local municipality and Dutch semiconductor company ASML.

Eindhoven Mayor Jeroen Dijsselbloem said: "This is an incredible opportunity, and we are seizing it with both hands to make it a reality as quickly as possible – together with the Rijksmuseum, ASML and other, future partners."

He added, "The Rijksmuseum in Eindhoven will be a valuable addition to the cultural landscape of Brabant and beyond, with art and history serving as a unifying force in our rapidly growing Brainport region.

"This museum is set to become a place where everyone can enjoy a unique blend of history and creativity."

Christophe Fouquet, CEO of ASML, said the company is "proud to be associated with the Rijksmuseum and excited to support them in this initiative, together with the municipality of Eindhoven".
