Located at the heart of cultural life in Aberdeen for nearly 200 years, the Scottish city’s Music Hall reopened recently after a two-year renovation. Visitors to the 19th Century concert hall are now greeted by a ‘Stepping In’ digital screen installation by ‘story engineers‘ Sysco Productions.

The screen’s 2.5 x 4.5m surface comprises a configuration of 5 by 9 Scanlite P1.9 LED panels. It creates a striking digital canvas and focal point for visitors on arrival to the hall, which has been open again to the public since December.

The building was chosen for a £9 million ($11.8m/€10.5m) restoration, conservation and upgrade by Aberdeen Performing Arts after being recognised as a heritage asset of national significance. The project is part of a wider redevelopment of the city’s Union Street.

Music hall visitors pass the screen inside the vestibule area as they make their way into the main building. Embedded in the wall between the glass doors, it delivers a flush, seamless finish.

When standing up close, this high-end display of 1.9mm pixel pitch offers exquisite detail. Nonetheless, it is equally effective at catching the eye of passers-by as they walk past the entrance to the historic hall, which has hosted everyone from Winston Churchill to Billy Connolly.

Evolving media content

The display showcases highlights from the Music Hall’s rich history. To adapt to the venue’s evolving event programme, a simple file upload software on a PC allows media to be updated easily. Meanwhile the panels are fully front serviceable, allowing easy access for any checks or repairs.

“The Stepping In Screen provides a spectacular, contemporary welcome to the Category A listed hall,” says Leon Gray at Aberdeen Music Hall. “This stunning portrait screen invites people in to explore the newly reopened and much-loved venue. Sysco Productions understood our brief right from the start. Collaborating with partners Scanlite and ISO Design, [they] have delivered a high-quality screen that has exceeded all of our expectations.”

The visitor experience in the Music Hall’s public foyer was further enhanced through Sysco’s collaboration with Elmwood and AVS to custom design and build three kiosks, each mounted with 24” interactive screens.
