‘Saw This, Made This’ is billed as the world’s largest mass participation AI art event.

Baz Luhrmann and Bombay Sapphire are opening an experimental installation called ‘Saw This, Made This’ featuring Ai-Da, the world’s first ultra-realistic humanoid AI robot artist.

Launching on World Creativity and Innovation Day (21 April), the installation includes a curated collection of submissions shared via social media.

The project invited people to see the world as a gallery of creative inspiration and share on social media what they saw and made.

Bombay Sapphire’s ‘Saw This, Made This’ campaign launched in October 2022, with Australian film director Luhrmann serving as its creative director.

“I truly believe creativity lies within us all,” said Luhrmann. The aim of the campaign, he added, is “to show people that creative inspiration exists all around them”.

“Thousands of people have shared the things that have sparked their own creativity – and the results have been extraordinary,” he said.

After its run at the Design Museum in London from 21 to 24 April, the installation will be at Chelsea Factory in New York from 11 to 13 May.

Billed as the world’s largest mass participation artificial intelligence (AI) art event, visitors to both venues will get to interact with Ai-Da

As part of the installation, guests will see Ai-Da painting live for the first time ever. “It is exciting to know that our combined efforts will reflect the creative works of everyone involved in Saw This, Made This,” said Ai-Da.

“I cannot wait to see the final artworks; it’s going to be so inspiring.”

Additionally, on 21 April, the Design Museum is hosting a special evening event with creative cocktails by Bombay Sapphire.

Tim Marlow, the Design Museum’s director, said: “The idea of bringing together creative perspectives from six continents as part of the world’s largest mass participation AI art event, done in partnership with a robot artist, is radical.

“It offers us the chance to explore human creativity on a scale rarely seen. It is highly experimental but at the same time relies on intensely controlled algorithmic AI programming.”

Lauren Kiel, Chelsea Factory’s executive director, said “experimentation is in Chelsea Factory’s DNA”.

Ai-Da recently became the first robot to speak at the House of Lords. Prior to that, she participated in an AI exhibition and event series at Oxford University.
