Panasonic Connect, a leading audiovisual technology provider, has revealed that its projection system was selected to power the biggest permanent projection mapping display on the planet.
The display at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku launched in February and has been certified by Guinness World Records as the largest architectural projection-mapped display (permanent).
Looking forward, the system will adorn the building with a variety of multimedia programming to support the nighttime economy.
Popularity of projection mapping
Decorating urban structures with projection-mapped content has become a popular method to boost tourism value after dark. These attractions have established an audience with both international and domestic travellers, residents, and families, showing an increasing appetite for immersive entertainment.
There is a growing demand for advanced visual equipment with greater expressive ability which can harness the emotive potential of projected content. However, the efficiency of such systems is compromised by increasingly complicated installation, adjustment, and management processes, and a shortage of specialist staff.
To overcome these issues, the world’s largest permanent projection mapping display on the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building utilises Panasonic’s AcroSign digital signage solution together with high-brightness Panasonic projectors and an immersive sound system.
AcroSign’s centralised projection mapping technology supports cloud-based remote management and content updates, and Panasonic’s Remote Managed Service also allows for system status monitoring from off-site locations, which helps simplify management and maintenance processes.
Cloud-controlled production
Key features of the projection mapping system include:
- The brightest projectors on the planet and immersive sound. 20 Panasonic’s PT-RQ50K projectors, the brightest projectors weighing 150 kg or less in the world, and 20 PT-RZ34K projectors provide clear, vivid, and immersive visuals across a large space. A RAMSA sound system provides synchronised audio, which enhances the sensation of immersion.
- Cloud-based operation utilising AcroSign and Remotely Managed Service. The AcroSign-based content management system enables employees to monitor and update the entertainment programme without having to physically attend the location. Furthermore, Remotely Managed Service allows for remote equipment status checks and live projection monitoring by camera, simplifying system monitoring, management, and maintenance.
- Projectors optimised for permanent outdoor use. Specially designed projector bodies have improved dust, water, and vibration resistance, ensuring reliable safe long-term use in outdoor settings.
The firm says: “With the No.1 market share in the high-brightness projector market in Japan, Panasonic aims to enhance experiential value by delivering overwhelming visual beauty, operational efficiency, and reliability. As part of our mission to “Create unseen worlds together,” Panasonic strives to be an invaluable partner, improving the overall experience in immersive media-based entertainment and event spaces.”
Earlier this year, Panasonic Connect launched two new product series at ISE 2024 to enhance immersive experiences; the RQ7 1-Chip DLP projector series and the ET-FMP50 series of media processors.
