Technifex enjoys 35 years of special effects expertise

Thirty-five years after leaving Walt Disney Imagineering, Technifex founders Rock Hall and Monty Lunde are looking back fondly on a career supplying special effects to the themed entertainment industry.

After their departure from Disney, Hall and Lunde followed their dreams and set up a small business in Valencia, California. Having established Technifex in 1984, they found a market niche by providing design, engineering and fabrication of technical special effects for a varied range of clients.

Their first project was at Six Flags Power Plant, an indoor theme park developed by the regional park chain in Baltimore. This led to work for telecom giant AT&T. After working on the original King Kong attraction at Universal Studios in Hollywood, the company’s themed entertainment legacy was secured.

Technifex has since become well-established within the industry, taking on a greater number of projects each year, of ever-increasing size. The firm’s special effects – including its patented FauxFire product line – have been used to intensify experiences in location-based entertainment, casinos, cruise lines, hotels, museums, the military and ‘experiential’ events.

Technifex’s work also features at Universal Orlando Resort’s Volcano Bay water theme park, which was presented with an award for outstanding achievement at the TEA’s recent Thea Awards Gala at Disneyland Resort.

“Rock and I are very proud of Technifex’s 35-year legacy and the team we have assembled that really make the magic happen,” says Monty Lunde, Technifex president. “We are also extremely grateful to our clients who have had faith in our team’s ability to solve complex challenges and meet critical deadlines. All in the name of fun!”

To help keep up with demand for their work, Hall and Lunde are continuing to hire engineers, fabrication experts and senior management.

Technifex’s is currently supporting Dreamscape Immersive VR Experience centers with the opening of three augmented reality experiences at Westfield Century City Mall in Los Angeles.

Meanwhile the firm is expanding its range of FauxFire products. Now available in several formats including a campfire, torch, and ‘afterburner’, these provide what are described as the world’s most realistic fake flame effects.
