Dutch theme park to remove fire and add LED lights

Dutch fairytale theme park Efteling has updated its popular Aquanura water show as part of its efforts to reduce its carbon footprint.

The revamped Aquanura show debuts this winter and features a new musical score and new-look frogs. All of the lighting is being replaced by LED lighting, and the show’s fire effects, which use propane, are being removed.

Instead of fire effects, Efteling has added four eight-metre-high “beacons of light” around the pond to bring the show to life through thematic lighting.

By removing fire and adding LED lights, Efteling is moving towards its goal to be climate neutral by 2030 and climate positive by 2032.

Additionally, the park has been using its own sustainable energy system to heat and cool buildings in the Anderrijk area, which houses Aquanura, using thermal energy storage. Efteling’s gas consumption has been reduced by 20 percent since using the system.

Earlier this year, Efteling announced plans to electrify its steam trains. They will still look the same, but will be propelled by electricity, with show effects added to replicate the steam.

In an interview with blooloop in 2021, Efteling CEO Fons Jurgens said: “Caring for the environment and sustainability is in our DNA.

“Efteling’s ambition is to be climate neutral in 2030 and we would like to reduce our footprint. We are already doing many things. For example by generating our own energy, using electric vehicles in the park.”

In more news, Efteling is opening its new haunted attraction, Danse Macabre, on 31 October – just in time for Halloween.

Since opening in 1952, more than 130 million people have visited Efteling.
