Theme parks can now operate at 50 percent capacity, and guests need to show proof of vaccination.

Hong Kong Disneyland has reopened to visitors as the city relaxed pandemic restrictions on Thursday (21 April). Attractions including Ocean Park and M+ have also reopened.

Hong Kong Disneyland closed in January 2022 in response to Hong Kong’s fifth wave of Covid-19. Theme parks can now operate at 50 percent capacity, and guests need to show proof of vaccination.

The Omicron variant led to a surge of Covid-19 cases in the city earlier this year. Hong Kong closed venues including theme parks, museums, bars, gyms and swimming pools. It also banned major events and non-essential gatherings.

“It’s time to reunite and feel the magic once again,” said Hong Kong Disneyland’s managing director, Michael Moriarty.

“I’m really thrilled about our long-awaited park reopening,” added Audrey Leung, guest relations host, park operations at Hong Kong Disneyland.

“It’s a great feeling to once again be working face-to-face with my fellow teammates, and to welcome our guests returning to this magical place!”

Attractions such as Ocean Park and the M+ museum have also reopened in Hong Kong. In addition, restaurants are allowed to reopen in the evening.

“Just hearing the park’s background music makes me feel like I’m home,” said Stephen Yeung, executive sous chef at Hong Kong Disneyland.

During the closure, Hong Kong Disneyland partnered with local non-profit organisations to donate Disney merchandise and essential items, including toys, masks and food, to more than 15,000 people.

The park also gave out 10,000 admission tickets to seven local non-profits ahead of the reopening.

Elsewhere, character greetings and interactions are returning to Walt Disney World Resort in Florida and Disneyland Resort in California.
