Hong Kong reported 13 new confirmed Covid-19 cases and 26 asymptomatic infections on Tuesday (January 4). It announced 34 imported cases, three cases epidemiologically linked with previous imported cases, and one local case on Wednesday (January 5).

In response, Hong Kong’s government is closing venues including theme parks, museums, bars, gyms and swimming pools. It is also banning major events and non-essential gatherings for 14 days.

“We are in a race against time to stop the Omicron variant from spreading in the community,” said Hong Kong’s chief executive Carrie Lam (via Variety).

Passenger flights into the city from eight countries will also be banned for 14 days from January 8. Flights are not permitted from Australia, Canada, France, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, the UK and the US.

In the US, the Smithsonian is temporarily reducing public hours at many of its museums in Washington, D.C. The institution is preparing for staff shortages due to the recent surge in Covid-19 cases.
