Shanghai Disney Draws 4 Million Guests, Word of Mouth is High

Disney confirmed that its new $5.5 billion Shanghai theme park, Shanghai Disney resort, had over four million visitors in its first four months of business and that it will come close to breaking even in its first full year of operation in 2017.

One demographic that surprised analysts was the number of visitors from outside the region. Expectations were that only around 25% would come from outside the shanghai area: a “big surprise” for Disney Chief Executive Officer Bob Iger was that over 50% were from outside the immediate locality.

“The fact that it’s so balanced leads us to believe that word of mouth on this and the intent to visit from well beyond Shanghai is very, very high, ” he said.
