Stupet, Norway’s tallest drop tower, will open this June at Kongeparken – offering guests a choice of two ride experiences.

Thanks to its location in Ålgård outside Stavanger, the 80m-tall construction will actually sit 242m (almost 800 feet) above sea level. Lund Gruppen, the park’s operator, is investing 30 million kronor ($4.5m/€4m) in the attraction from the Austrian manufacturer Funtime.

Stupet translates from Norwegian as ‘The Cliff’. Kongeparken guests will able to enjoy a different experience on the tower according to the time of day they ride it.

In the mornings, the ride will act as a viewing platform for the whole family to enjoy breathtaking views across the entire Jæren district of Rogaland as the 24-seat gondola rotates slowly around the tower.

From 2pm onwards, however, thrill-seekers will be able to test their limits as they fall from 0 to 125km an hour in two seconds. The acceleration equals over three times the force of gravity (3G).

For an hour each day from midday, guests can enjoy a game of chance. Sometimes the ride will lower its cargo of passengers in a slow and steady manner. Or they might experience an exhilarating free fall. Riders will never know until they hit the ground!

Putting Rogaland on the international map

“This will be an amazing experience of extreme proportions,” promises Kongeparken CEO, Håkon Lund. “Stupet is a good fit for the tourism county of Rogaland by combining scenery, adrenalin and bravery. With record numbers of tourists in the region, the time has come to invest in something out of the ordinary that will create attention internationally.”

Famed for its teddy bear characters and Thea Award-winning children’s attractions, Kongeparken has a strong family following. With Stupet, it is attempting to appeal additionally to a more mature audience. The new ride will debut on June 13, exactly two months after the start of the season.

In addition to Kongeparken, the Lund Group also operates Skånes Djurpark in Sweden, a travelling carnival and music festival business.
