A record 27.22 million people visited Tokyo Disneyland and Tokyo DisneySea in fiscal 2008, up 7.1 per cent on the year, theme park operator Oriental Land Co. (TSE:4661) reported Wednesday.
The combined turnout was boosted by large-scale parades and other events commemorating the 25th anniversary of Tokyo Disneyland’s opening in 1983 as well as promotions in 29 cities nationwide.
The weather was favorable, too, with fewer typhoons. In addition, vacationers preferred affordable, short stays in nearby spots. Fuel surcharges for planes spiked in the first half of fiscal 2008, depressing demand for overseas leisure trips. And the global economic downturn forced consumers to tighten their purse strings.
Oriental Land upgraded its admission forecast twice in the year ended Tuesday. The number of actual visits exceeded the most recent projection of 27.1 million.
