Against the backdrop of the 2010 Shanghai World Expo, and on the eve of the upcoming round of the Strategic and Economic Dialogue between the US and China, Covington & Burling LLP will co-host a day-long event, “Shaping the US-China Business Relationship” on Friday, May 21.  The event will be held at the USA National Pavilion, which Covington, a sponsor and the official legal services provider to the USA National Pavillion, has played an instrumental role in developing and bringing to fruition.

Top executives from more than a dozen of China’s leading private enterprises are among the 120 guests who are expected to attend the event, which will assess the current global economic, financial and regulatory environment and the state of US-China economic relations, and forecast how they will evolve over the coming years.  Speakers will include Ambassador Zhou Wenzhong, who has recently returned to China following a long posting to the US as China’s Ambassador; Duncan Niederauer, CEO of NYSE/Euronext; Ellen Eliasoph, managing partner of Covington’s Beijing office and Co-Founder of the USA Pavilion; Tim Stratford, a Covington partner who recently served as Deputy U.S. Trade Representative for China Affairs; and Alan Larson, a senior advisor at Covington who formerly served as Undersecretary of State for Economic, Business and Agricultural Affairs.

Co-hosting the event with Covington are J.P. Morgan and Caijing, China’s leading financial news media and publishing conglomerate.  Supporting sponsors are NYSE Euronext, the China Industrial Overseas Development & Planning Association, and the Chinese Private Enterprise Pavilion.
The 2010 Shanghai World Expo opened May 1 and runs through October 31, 2010.  More than 70 million people are projected to attend the Expo, 95% of whom are expected to come from Mainland China.  This marks the first time China has hosted a world expo.

At more than 60, 000 square feet, the USA National Pavilion is one of the largest pavilions at the Expo.  It showcases American culture, values, and businesses in one of the world’s most dynamic cities, while at the same time celebrating the friendship and cooperation between the US and China.  The Pavilion has been warmly received by the public and media in China, and, having become a “must-see” for Expo visitors, passed the 500, 000 visitors mark within the first 15 days of the Expo.
