Georgia Aquarium Dolphin Expansion Honored in Four-State Region

PGAV Destinations, a global leader in the planning and design of cultural and entertainment destinations, is pleased to announce that their Georgia Aquarium Dolphin Expansion project has been named the “Best Cultural Project” 2010 Award winner by Southeast Construction Magazine.

Opening to the public in November 2010, the $110 million project includes an 84, 000 square foot space, about the size of two football fields, with a 1.3 million gallon exhibit housing trained bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). The expansion, located on the west side of the present Aquarium building in downtown Atlanta, will house dolphin encounters, viewing windows and dolphin shows.

PGAV Destinations served as both architect and exhibit designer for this project, following their role as exhibit designer for the highly successful initial phase of the Georgia Aquarium. “We are honored and excited to continue to be a part of the Georgia Aquarium. This expansion brings a well-loved, favorite animal to a world class home, ” according to Jim Moorkamp, Principal PGAV Destinations.

The annual Southeast Construction competition recognizes construction and design excellence in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. This year, 183 entries vied for top honors in 22 different categories. An independent jury of industry experts reviewed the entries and selected this year’s winners. Eligible projects had to be located within the four-state region and substantially completed between Sept. 1, 2009 and Sept. 1, 2010.
