A water park, zip line, athletic facilities, hotel and retail space are all part of a master plan for the redevelopment of the Cohen Stadium site in El Paso, Texas.
The master plan for redevelopment of the vacant baseball stadium was revealed last week. The city plans to develop the water park, a media broadcasting studio, an urban plaza, greenspace and athletic facilities itself and partner with developers for the hotel and retail space.
El Paso officials set aside $7.7m for the water park last year, however the rest of the project is still in need of funding. The master plan is expected to go before the city council in March.
Jessica Herrera, city economic and international development director, told El Paso Inc that the city is considering forming a tax increment reinvestment zone to fund the project.
The baseball stadium has bee vacant since 2013, when the El Paso Diablos team folded. An initial proposal to redevelop the site was shared in October 2017. The latest plans are based on focus groups and public comments on the initial proposal. The main change between the two is the elimination of a housing component.
