Icon of the Seas boasts the biggest water park at sea, with family raftings, a vertical freefall slide, and the highest drop-capsule waterslide

wiegand.waterrides, a leading water rides and attraction provider, has revealed details of its innovative designs for the water park onboard Royal Caribbean’s cruise ship, Icon of the Seas.

Icon of the Seas launched in January as the world’s biggest cruise ship and features the largest water park at sea.

“Icon of the Seas set a true milestone in water park design on a ship,” says a representative from wiegand.waterrides. “Never before was there such a high diversification and volume of waterslides to choose from for guests – a true water park at sea.”

Icon of the Seas’ sister ship, Star of the Seas, is now under construction. The new cruise liner will feature a second edition of the water park at sea.

For thrill-seekers & families

The Icon of the Seas includes a range of storm-themed slides which feature sounds, LED lighting, and unique daylight effects like thunderbolts and alarm sirens. A standout design element is the world-first Wie-glow effect, a glow-in-the-dark blacklight colour which is hand-painted freestyle into the slide.

The ship’s attractions include the first vertical freefall slide at sea, as well as the highest drop-capsule waterslide with a crystal clear freefall section that allows spectators to share in the excitement.

Two family raftings form a highlight of the water park. wiegand created a brand-new waterslide tube to deliver this experience onboard the ship. The compact tube is just big enough to fit rafts for two adults and two children, while still offering the swing and pendulum that make group rafting so much fun.

The design includes a classic Lotus leaf element crafted in one-third translucent acrylic, which makes riders feel like they are flying through the air during the zero-gravity moment.

Royal Caribbean added creative decor and audio throughout the area to further enhance the water park. In addition, dozens of spray nozzles periodically generate a real rain storm that drenches visitors, accompanied by a thunderous soundtrack.

Recently, wiegand.waterrides shared how it is helping attractions to get ready for the summer season with its stainless steel solutions, which offer a smooth slide finish, long lifespan and minimal maintenance.
