A special celebration takes place this month in Almere, the Netherlands

Floriade, the International Horticultural Exhibition, is today celebrating German National Day at one of the event’s most popular destinations.

Dr Katharina Böttcher from Germany’s Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) will be in attendance at a special ceremony for the occasion, alongside Floriade commissioner general, Annemarie Jorritsma-Lebbink.

In the lead-up to German National Day, Böttcher said: “Floriade Expo 2022 is focusing on a global issue of the future. More and more people around the world are living in megacities. This calls for new answers, especially with regard to climate change, but also to a better quality of life in our cities.”

Hive of activity

Identifiable by its wooden pavilion with a continually growing green facade, the German Garden architecturally represents the sustainable coexistence of nature and modern society. BIOTOPIA – Growing Community is one of Floriade Expo 2022’s most popular exhibits, having welcomed approximately 300,000 visitors to date.

The German Garden has this week been home to a varied cultural programme with live performances from duo Felice & Cortes and DJ collective LEKKA LEKKA. There have also been short films on climate change, discussions hosted by the German Designer Club and lectures on biodiversity monitoring of birds through the use of AI.

Future events include an appearance by the Community of European Buckfast Beekeepers who will hold a workshop and formally open two Buckfast bee hives on the rooftop garden of the German Garden. Buckfast bees are an industrious yet peaceful bee colony that produces above-average yields.

“The German Garden aims to show possible ways towards a sustainable and liveable urban future. In doing so, we invite visitors on a journey into the green city of tomorrow that is as entertaining as it is informative,” adds Böttcher.

Another popular installation at this year’s event is a bridge manufactured from sustainable materials including high-tech flax, using alternative construction practices.
