International aquarium expert Warren Baverstock has introduced ArcVigil, an independent consultancy that assists owners, investors, developers, and operators in creating safer, more robust, and commercially resilient aquarium and marine life attractions.
Modern aquariums are expected to balance animal welfare, conservation, scientific research and education with the need to deliver engaging visitor experiences and operate successfully over the long term.
These requirements can become more complex when projects involve challenging architectural and technical environments.

ArcVigil was created to offer independent oversight of aquarium projects, concentrating on evaluating assets from operational, commercial, and animal welfare viewpoints.

Founded by Baverstock after over 30 years of global leadership in aquariums and marine life, the consultancy provides independent advisory services, design oversight, and operational support throughout an attraction's lifecycle.
ArcVigil's expertise covers initial vision and concept development, feasibility studies, operational modelling, design review, procurement, construction, commissioning, opening preparation, as well as post-opening optimisation, regulatory compliance, technical due diligence, and operational recovery.

“An aquarium can be architecturally extraordinary and technically sophisticated, yet still inherit operational compromises that remain problematic for decades,” says Baverstock.
“Many of the challenges experienced after opening are designed into a project years earlier. ArcVigil exists to give clients an experienced, independent voice capable of looking beyond individual design packages and protecting the long-term performance of the entire asset.”
Aquarium projects usually include architects, engineers, exhibit designers, life-support specialists, contractors, zoological teams, operators, and commercial advisers. Each contributes essential skills, but their expertise is often split across different disciplines, organisations, and phases of development.
ArcVigil consolidates these perspectives from the client’s side.
Without the need to sell equipment, appoint contractors, or protect individual design packages, the consultancy can assess whether decisions align with the owner’s original vision, animal welfare responsibilities, operational needs, and long-term commercial objectives.
This involves challenging assumptions, validating critical decisions, and ensuring considerations for life-support systems, back-of-house environments, animal care, visitor flow, staffing, maintenance, and commercial operations are addressed early, preventing costly constraints later.

Baverstock’s career spans leadership roles at the National Marine Aquarium, Burj Al Arab, and Dubai Turtle Rehabilitation Project, followed by major marine development projects in Saudi Arabia for Red Sea Global and Saudi Entertainment Ventures.

He led the client-side concept development and operational planning for Corallium, initially called the Red Sea Marine Life Institute, which blends immersive guest experiences, marine science, conservation, education, and research within a key marine environment.
Additionally, he led the development of a new aquarium concept for SEVEN, emphasising close guest engagement, immersive views, and operational excellence from the start, rather than adding these features later.
Alongside new advancements, ArcVigil assists both existing and underperforming aquariums with operational assessments, welfare and regulatory compliance, infrastructure and life-support system reviews, governance, commercial optimisation, and recovery strategies.
The consultancy also collaborates with investors and asset owners during acquisitions, helping them understand not only the nature of their purchase but also the operational risks, future liabilities, and needed investments to safeguard and enhance the asset.
