Merlin is applying for permission to keep the observation wheel open beyond 2028.

Merlin Entertainments has revealed plans to make the London Eye a permanent visitor attraction on the South Bank.

The London Eye is already owned and operated by Merlin, with the company now applying for permission to keep the observation wheel open beyond 2028.

Per a press release, the London Eye’s planning permission includes a condition requiring the local planning authority to decide whether it can be retained after 2028.

Through its upcoming application to Lambeth Council, Merlin is hoping to discharge the planning condition.

The London Eye is a UK success story with a global reach,” said Mike Vallis, Merlin’s divisional director for Midway attractions in the UK, which includes the London Eye.

The capital’s “most visited paid for attraction”, said Vallis, “continues to be enjoyed by millions of guests every year”.

“Now is the time to ensure the Eye can be enjoyed for generations to come, and we look forward to working with Lambeth Council to secure the necessary amendment to the existing planning permission,” he added.

The London Eye opened on 31 December 1999 in celebration of the millennium. Its first paying passenger was admitted on 9 March 2000. Merlin is submitting a discharge of condition application in spring 2023.

Plans to keep experience open beyond 2028

“The London Eye is established as one of our capital’s most recognisable visitor attractions, and is a must-see destination for tourists from at home and abroad,” said London’s mayor, Sadiq Khan.

“It is fantastic news that Merlin Entertainments is bringing forward plans for the Eye’s permanent future to secure its place as an integral part of London’s long-term visitor offer.”

Last month, Merlin named Scott O’Neil as its new CEO. He is overseeing the company’s 147 attractions in 24 countries. O’Neil has replaced Nick Varney, who retired after 23 years.
