Mall of America in Bloomington has teamed up with a Minnesota-based nonprofit to enhance accessibility and sensory inclusion across the property.

At 5.6 million square feet, Mall of America is the largest shopping and entertainment complex in North America with up to 500 retail stores and restaurants, the Nickelodeon Universe indoor theme park, a Sea Life aquarium, and more attractions.

To expand accessibility and sensory-inclusive initiatives around the destination, Mall of America has teamed up with Fraser, a leader in autism, mental and behavioural health, and disability inclusion.

"At Mall of America, we are committed to ensuring every guest feels welcome and supported," said Jill Renslow, chief business development and marketing officer at Mall of America.

"Our partnership with Fraser allows us to take meaningful steps forward in accessibility and sensory inclusion, creating an environment where all guests can fully experience everything the mall has to offer."

Via a press release, guest-centred solutions have been implemented throughout the mall, including visible on-site features and behind-the-scenes enhancements.

Accessibility solutions

These include the introduction of a new accessibility widget on the mall's digital directories that highlights wheelchair-accessible routes and key amenities like sensory rooms, elevators, family restrooms and accessible parking.

Additionally, Mall of America now provides three calm areas for guests, and accessibility improvements have been made to the mall's attractions.

For example, Nickelodeon Universe has updated its sensory guide, enhanced its sensory room, and improved wayfinding signage.

Also, all Mall of America team members are taking part in specialised training, developed in partnership with Fraser.

"Inclusion is about more than access, it’s about belonging," said Gina Brady, sensory supports and training programme manager at Fraser.

"This partnership helps ensure that guests of all ages and abilities can experience Mall of America in a way that works for them, with the understanding, flexibility, and support they deserve."
