Elizabeth Merritt VP Strategic Foresight, & Founding Director American Association of Museums

Elizabeth Merritt is VP, Strategic Foresight and Founding Director, Center for the Future of Museums at the American Alliance of Museums (AAM).

Founded in 1906, The American Alliance of Museums is the leading trade association for museum professionals in the US. It develops standards and best practices, gathers and shares knowledge and advocates on issues of concern to the museum community.

Merritt is AAM’s VP for Strategic Foresight and also the founder director of the Center for the Future of Museums. This is an influential think-tank and research and development laboratory focussed on the development of museums. Essentially, its aim is to future-proof museums.  Merritt is a tireless advocate for diversity and inclusion in the museum sector. She is also the author of AAM’s annual TrendsWatch report.

Merritt’s work covers strategic foresight and trends analysis as applied to museum planning and operation and she also monitors emerging practices in other sectors that AAM may want to adopt.

She has an M.A. in biology from Duke University, a B.S. in ecology and evolution from Yale University and a certificate in future studies from the University of Houston.
