AAM 2024 Future of Museums Summit programme

The American Alliance of Museums (AAM) has released the full programme for its 2024 Future of Museums Summit.

The event, which is taking place online from 29 to 30 October 2024, will explore how climate change, AI, the loneliness crisis, and culture wars might all significantly impact the future of the museum industry. To view the full schedule and register please click here.

Hundreds of museum professionals are set to attend the Summit, which will provide insights into handling these challenges. Attendees will also find inspiration for the abilities, approaches, and ways of working that their museum will require for success in a volatile environment.

Extensive programme

Delegates can choose from 16 concurrent live sessions and view those they have missed on-demand until 31 January 2025.

In addition to Keynote and Big Idea sessions, the concurrent sessions include:

  • DEI Backlash: Here, There, & Everywhere. 29 October, 2-3 pm ET. Three panellists from renowned museums will discuss how their organisations have withstood high-profile attacks and come out stronger.
  • Piloting a Museum Prescription Program. 29 October, 3.10 – 4.10 pm ET. Attendees will learn about the museum’s early triumphs and tribulations in building a community-wide social prescription initiative to address loneliness in Charlotte, North Carolina.
  • Building Tomorrow’s Future Together: How City Initiatives Are Inspiring Collective Museum Climate Action. 30 October, 2.35 – 3.35 pm ET. This session will explore how three American cities’ cultural communities have joined forces to effect significant change by decarbonising their operations, encouraging meaningful climate action, and preparing for a dramatically disrupted future.
  • Navigating the Transformative Impact of Artificial Intelligence on Museums. 30 October, 3.50 – 4.50 pm ET. Drawing from lessons learned from a museum AI Task Force, interactive case studies, and hands-on demos, this session will look at practical applications for museums wanting to establish a framework for using and deploying AI

In addition, the 2024 Future of Museums Summit will include opportunities to connect with other museum professionals in the Social Lounge and Play and Practice Sessions. The Social Lounge offers a space to meet with peers at virtual tables, and attendees can join moderated groups or create their own. Meanwhile, the interactive Play and Practice sessions encourage collaboration, creativity, and innovative thinking through hands-on activities.

Earlier this year, AAM announced the appointment of Marilyn Jackson as president and CEO following an extensive national search.
