To mark the reopening, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery will launch a special exhibition in the Gas Hall in May 2022.

Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery (BMAG) is set to partially reopen in April next year after closing to the public for almost two years due to the pandemic and essential electrical work.

From April 28, 2022, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery is reopening the Industrial Gallery, Round Room, Edwardian Tearooms, Bridge Gallery, Gallery 10 and BMAG shop. The rest of the institution will remain closed for work.

“The year ahead is really exciting,” said Sara Wajid and Zak Mensah, who were appointed as co-CEOs of Birmingham Museums Trust last year.

“Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery has been closed – firstly by the pandemic and then for rewiring – and we’re going to partially reopen in 2022 in time for the Commonwealth Games, and it’s going to feel very different.”

To mark the reopening, BMAG will host Birmingham’s creatives, including Birmingham Music Archive, Fierce Festival, Flatpack Projects, Kalaboration Arts, and Don’t Settle in partnership with Beatfreeks.

In addition, Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery will launch a special exhibition in the Gas Hall in May 2022, with further details to be announced at a later date.

“We’ve invited some of the city’s leading creatives and arts organisations to animate the Round Room and Industrial Gallery with vibrant new displays that feel much more immediate,” Wajid and Mensah added.

“We’ll be touching on themes like popular culture, identity and community and there will be a very warm welcome inviting everyone to join in. We can’t wait!”

Birmingham City Council’s essential electrical works will continue at the museum through 2023 or 2024. For the project to take place, more than 36,000 items from the collection have been moved into safe storage.

Birmingham Museums Trust recently revealed plans to develop a “unique and innovative” science and industry museum in the city alongside Birmingham City Council and the Science Museum Group.
