The Centre Pompidou has announced plans for a new museum near Iguazu Falls in the Brazilian state of ParanĂ¡.
The Centre Pompidou’s first outpost in South America is due to open in 2027. It will be located in the city of Foz do Iguaçu near Iguazu Falls, a Unesco World Heritage site and the second most-visited site in Brazil.
The city is situated on the Brazilian border with Argentina and Paraguay, with the museum’s exhibits and events to focus on the cultures of the three countries.
Centre Pompidou’s global expansion
In a statement, the Centre Pompidou said the Brazil institution will present modern and contemporary art exhibitions, live performances, festivals, film screenings, conferences, and artist residencies.
The museum will be designed by Paraguayan architect Solano BenĂtez. The building will include exhibition spaces, performance halls, educational workshops, a research library, art labs, a restaurant, and a shop.
Centre Pompidou x ParanĂ¡ will join existing satellite locations in Metz, Malaga and Shanghai, as well as the iconic institution in Paris, France.
New museums are also planned for Seoul, Brussels, Jersey City, and Saudi Arabia’s AlUla development. The Centre Pompidou’s new plan for Jersey City was revealed last year.
Back in Paris, the Centre Pompidou is set to close this summer for a five-year expansion and renovation project.
The cost of the redevelopment, provided by the French state, is estimated to be between €262 million and €358m.
Saudi Arabia is giving €50m towards the renovation in an expansion of its cultural partnership with France.
