Eiffel Tower Gets €300m Facelift

The Eiffel Tower is to undergo a €300m, 15-year refurbishment.

La Tour Eiffel was built in1889 for the Universal Exhibition in Paris. It was not originally built to be a permanent structure but was preserved as at the time it was the tallest building in the world and was useful as a radiotelegraph station

Today theEiffel Tower is the world's most popular monument, attracting seven million visitors a year.

The planned refurbishment ties in with bids from Paris to host the2024 Olympic and Paralympic games and the World’s Fair in 2025.

Works include modernising the lifts and second floor viewing gallery, improvements to access and security, repainting and an overhaul of the hourly light show.

The project will be managed by the tower’s operator, the Société d’Exploitation de la Tour Eiffel.
