Science North is providing its expertise to help create a new science centre in Guangzhou, China.

Canada’s 2nd largest science centre has signed a cooperation memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Grandview Enterprise Co., Ltd.

The agreement gives Grandview access to Science North’s wealth of experience regarding science centre operations. It also has great expertise in science education, commerce, professional services, and talent training.

Guy Labine, Science North CEO and Max Xie, CEO of Grandview Enterprise signed the MOU during the Guangzhou International Shopping Festival (ISF). The festival’s theme – Creating a World Class Tourist City – focused specifically on Canadian collaboration. The intention is to encourage cultural awareness, exchange, and sensitivity between the two regions while promoting commercial prosperity and tourism.

Science North increasingly seen as a ‘global voice’

“Science North’s collaboration with Grandview Enterprises will benefit both our organisations as we share our knowledge and expertise in operating a science centre as well as in science communication to the public,” said Labine.

“Not only does the partnership help Science North expand on its international external consulting, but it also demonstrates that Science North is beginning to become a global voice on the topics of science, education, tourism and culture.”

The Guangzhou science centre is part of Grandview’s plan to establish the region as a world-class destination. In 2016, it opened the Grandview Theatre. Future plans include a ‘Nature Museum’, ‘Rainforest Ecological Museum’ and ‘Cantonese Culture Street’.

“Grandview’s new museum developments are a great opportunity for us to collaborate with Science North,” said  Xie. “Our work together will become a connecting thread between our cities and our two countries.”

Science North is Northern Ontario’s most popular tourist attraction. A registered charity, it operates a range of educational and immersive attractions. These include a science centre, IMAX® theatre, digital Planetarium, butterfly gallery, special exhibits hall, and  also Dynamic Earth – Home of the Big Nickel. The latter is a separate science centre that explores mining and earth sciences.
