The International Museum Construction Congress (IMCC), an event that brings together museum and architecture professionals to explore sustainability, planning, project management, construction, renovation and expansion of museums, will take place in Edinburgh, Scotland, from 3 – 5 November 2024.
Early bird pricing is available until 1 August, and organisers will cap registration at 250 attendees in order to ensure quality networking opportunities.
ESG on the agenda
The theme of this year’s event is between the Environmental, Social, and/or Governance aspects of Museum Design and Construction.
The impending climate emergency necessitates quick and drastic cuts in energy use, environmental impact, and operational and embodied carbon in both new construction and retrofit projects. Notably, historic buildings and grounds are being retrofitted for some of the biggest capital museum projects in Scotland.
However the goal and success of capital projects (as well as the final museum objects they produce) are also increasingly structured, managed, and evaluated in terms of their governance, or the ideals and principles they uphold, and their social effect, or how they interact with stakeholders and communities. The ESG objectives are connected.
Sessions will cover notable projects such as
- Perth City Hall Reuse and Transformation for the Perth Museum
- The Urban Nature Project – Transforming the Natural History Museum’s Grounds
- Museum Prinsenhof Delft: An open and accessible museum in a heritage convent
- A session on The Network Effect: Leveraging Networks for Sustainable Museum Development

“An essential industry forum”
The event will take place in some of Edinburgh’s most beautiful cultural structures, including the National Museum of Scotland, McEwan Hall on the University of Edinburgh campus, and the Balmoral Hotel. Registered guests can choose from IMCC Fields Trips to The Burrell Collection, Edinburgh Castle, and the V&A Dundee.
“IMCC’s unique mix of sessions on the planning, commissioning, delivering and operating of major capital transformation projects and the insightful explorations of current debates and trends – plus the calibre of its attendees – have made it the most essential industry forum of the year,” says Jim Broughton, director of strategy, Event.
“On behalf of our chairperson, Anne Marie Galmstrup, and our entire planning committee, we are very excited to share the Edinburgh program with attendees this November. We received a record number of session proposals and feel this is one of our strongest programs yet,” adds Brian Mandrier, managing director of IMCC.
