Japanese real estate developer Koyu is creating a video game art museum for Japan in partnership with Daiwa House, Japan’s largest home builder.
Via Sora News 24, Koyu is the largest stakeholder in Koei Tecmo, a Japanese video game company created in 2009 by the merger of Koei and Tecmo.
Koei and Tecmo are behind video games like Dynasty Warriors, Nioh, Nobunaga’s Ambition, Romance of the Three Kingdoms, and Dead or Alive.
The new museum, called the Game Art Museum, is located in Yokohama’s Nishi-ku ward, around 30 minutes south of downtown Tokyo. There will be exhibits and immersive experiences, as well as a 3,000-square-metre art garden.
Construction on the attraction started in February, with completion scheduled for May 2027. An opening is expected later in summer 2027.
Video games in LBE sector
In a press release in February, Daiwa House said the museum will be a space for gamers from all over the world. Exhibits on character designs, visuals and sound in video games will feature inside the museum.
Daiwa House said the exterior design is spiralled to ‘evoke the image of life’, while the garden will be home to seasonal plants and gaming-inspired projection experiences.
Elsewhere, Nintendo’s upcoming museum in Kyoto, Japan is completed and scheduled to open in autumn of this year.
For the new attraction, Nintendo has repurposed an old factory building and its land. The Nintendo Museum will feature exhibits of gaming products and other experiences.
Nintendo previously revealed plans to take its intellectual property (IP) to “a variety of settings” beyond video games.
