Plans have been revealed for an international standard indoor snow centre to be built in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.
The snow centre will be home to the longest indoor ski slope in the UK. At 500m it will be longer than the current title-holder, in Manchester at 180m, and it will be one of the longest in Europe.
Lead developers, Marvel Limited, have signed an agreement with Snowsport Cymru Wales to work together on the delivery of the state-of-the-art snow sport facility.
The centre could be the future training base for the Team GB ski and snowboard team.
Robin Kellen, Chief Executive of Snowsport Cymru Wales said, “We have a great opportunity to use our natural resources in Wales to develop an indoor ski and snowboard facility that would provide year-round training facilities for Olympic athletes as well as local enthusiasts, to create opportunities for increasing participation in snow sports as well as developing a unique weather-proofed tourism attraction. Snowsport Cymru Wales has worked closely with the project development team for some time now to make sure we meet the long-term needs of the sport and ensure a sustainable business model for this project.”
Dan Hunt, Performance Director of British Ski and Snowboard said, “I am very excited by the prospect of having a national training centre of excellence for snowsports in Wales. We would really welcome the chance to be able to have access to more home-based training for our national team as well as the fantastic opportunities this facility would present in developing the next crop of talented athletes.”
The snow centre will be developed on an existing hillside, on a 575 acre site known as Rhydycar West.
Additional ideas are being explored for the site – including an equestrian centre, a mountain coaster, zip line, air park, log-cabin and yurt accommodation, as well as community facilities such as a playground, sports pitch and fishing ponds.
Merthyr Tydfil is a large town in Wales situated approximately 23 miles north of Cardiff.
