Puy du Fou's plans for a £600 million history-based theme park near Bicester in the UK have been backed by VisitBritain, the national tourism agency.

Puy du Fou submitted a planning application for the new park last year. If the project is approved, Puy du Fou will open its UK site in phases from 2029.

VisitBritain, which is funded by the Government's Department for Culture, Media and Sport, told the BBC it "can see the potential for this project to generate significant interest and excitement among domestic and international visitors alike".

Andrew Stokes, director of the British Tourist Authority, which also operates under the name VisitEngland, said Puy du Fou's plans "demonstrate confidence in the UK as a destination, in our leisure sector, and in the long-term strength of the visitor economy".

The new Puy du Fou theme park will attract an estimated 1.47 million visitors every year, delivering a £500m annual boost to the local and regional economy.

It will directly employ around 2,000 people, and support a further 6,000 jobs in hotels, restaurants, suppliers and other local businesses.

Experience Oxfordshire, the county's main destination management organisation, has also backed Puy du Fou's plans.

Hayley Beer-Gamage, Experience Oxfordshire's chief executive, said: "The decision by Puy du Fou to invest in Oxfordshire, and specifically within the Cherwell district, is a strong endorsement of the area as a globally recognised destination.

"This investment will drive job creation, stimulate economic growth, and increase visitor spend across both the district and the wider county."

The planned resort will immerse guests in British history at four period villages and 13 live shows. It also includes three hotels, each themed to different periods in British history.

Via the BBC, Blenheim Palace previously announced its support for Puy du Fou's UK plans.
