Japanese video game publisher has announced plans to launch officially licensed cafes in Los Angeles, California and Shinjuku, Tokyo.

Opening to the public in spring 2026, both locations will feature attached retail outlets selling a wide range of official merchandise.

In the cafes, guests will enjoy menu items inspired by various Square Enix brands, which include Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, and Kingdom Hearts.

Final Fantasy has sold more than 209 million units worldwide, while Dragon Quest has sold over 97 million units across the globe.

"This marks the first time an official Square Enix cafe offering a full, authentic menu will open in the US," Square Enix said in a press release announcing the new cafes.

"Both cafe and shop locations will be must‑visit destinations for all Square Enix fans," it added.

Further details, including opening dates, will be announced at a later time, said Square Enix.

Game developers including Nintendo, Ubisoft and Crystal Dynamics have all launched physical attractions in recent years, the biggest being the Super Nintendo World expansions at Universal parks, some of which house Donkey Kong areas.

In the UK, Tomb Raider: The Live Experience was a live attraction created by Little Lion Entertainment in collaboration with Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix.

Ubisoft is behind several virtual reality (VR) and escape room attractions, as well as a dark ride at Futuroscope in France.

Square Enix's expansion in the world of location-based entertainment (LBE) comes amid a growing trend for themed F&B experiences.
