Paediatric patents can control the robot themselves

The Florida Aquarium has launched an innovative initiative with Tampa General Hospital to give paediatric patients a tour of the aquarium using a rolling robot.

Through this groundbreaking technology, the Florida Aquarium is brought directly to the hospital beds of these patients, who can control the robot themselves using a tablet interface.

The robot is equipped with a camera and microphone. The camera is positioned where a face would be, providing a realistic perspective of the aquarium’s exhibits and experiences.

The robot is accompanied by an educator at the aquarium to answer questions and share information.

“We are thrilled to partner with Tampa General Hospital to bring the wonders of the Florida Aquarium to children who are receiving lifesaving treatment who may not have the opportunity to visit in person,” said Roger Germann, president and CEO of the aquarium.

“We created the partnership to provide a sense of normalcy and diversion during what is often an isolated time. Allowing them to physically join their family or participate on a field trip with their classmates puts smiles on everyone’s face and can help with the healing process.”

Third-grade student Gavin Benyon was one of the first patients to take a virtual tour of the Florida Aquarium while undergoing treatment at the hospital.

‘Tech for good’ in the attractions industry

“It’s hard to imagine. I’m just like walking through the aquarium when I’m really right here getting my infusion,” he said.

In more news, experts from the University of Glasgow in Scotland are testing an AI-powered robot guide dog to help blind and partially sighted visitors find their way around museums and other indoor spaces.

Tech for good, or tech for a better world, is one of blooloop’s top technology trends in the visitor attractions industry for 2024.
