A contractor has been appointed to build Ocean Park’s all-weather waterpark in Hong Kong. The HK$2.9 billion (US$370m/€330m) offering is set to open in late 2018.
Gammon Construction, comprising UK-based Balfour Beatty and Singapore-listed engineering group Jardine Matheson, will undertake construction of the main building at Ocean Park Water World. In addition, the joint venture will fit-out and install various indoor and outdoor attractions and carry out installation of mechanical and electrical services.
Ocean Park Water World will be the first and only waterfront water park in South East Asia. The ambitious 6,400 square-metre facility will feature a unique design seamlessly integrated with its hillside surroundings. A series of terraced platforms will face out onto the South China Sea from Ocean Park’s Aberdeen Harbour location. The park will boast 27 indoor and outdoor water attractions, many available in Hong Kong for the first time. Together with a new hotel, it forms an integral part of Ocean Park’s ongoing transformation into an international resort destination.
The venue’s main building will feature extensive glass walling and shell-shaped roofing, along with a translucent skylight system. Gammon will take a proactive role in the value engineering process, in collaboration with the Hong Kong Government-owned Ocean Park Corporation. Technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM) will be leveraged to maximise efficient co-ordination. Balfour Beatty said it expects a workforce of 750 to be engaged at construction peak.
