Oriental Land, the operator of Tokyo Disney Resort, is considering creating a third Disney park at the resort with the new area having a “sky” theme.

Tokyo Disney Resort already has two parks, the ocean-themed Tokyo DisneySea and Tokyo Disneyland. A source close to Oriental Land told The Mainichi that the company “wants to make a ‘one of a kind’ theme park, similar to Tokyo DisneySea”. With the focus being on a sky theme, “DisneySky” has been put forward as a potential name for the new park.

It emerged in November last year that Oriental Land was in discussions with the Walt Disney Company regarding an estimated $2.68bn expansion to increase the resorts footprint by around 30% to help ease congestion problems.

In a presentation to investors last month, Oriental Land revealed it is planning an undisclosed large-scale investment project scheduled to open in 2020. However, this may not be related to Disney Sky as The Mainichi is reporting that the company aims to start construction on the park in 2019 with an expected completion of 2022.

Attractions at the sky-themed park could include rides that simulate flight. Visitors may be able to fly the Millennium Falcon from Star Wars or take a ride on Aladdin’s magic carpet. It has also been reported that Oriental Land is considering installing moving walkways to make the park more accessible to those with mobility issues.

The company is currently examining the proposed park in further detail with a formal announcement not expected before April.
