Berlin police said there has been “incredible maritime damage“.

Berlin’s AquaDom aquarium in the Radisson hotel, home to 1,500 fish, has exploded. The world’s largest free-standing cylindrical aquarium contained a million litres of water.

According to the BBC, police said there has been “incredible maritime damage”. Two people were injured by glass shards, and debris from the burst was scattered in the street in front of the building.

“In addition to the incredible maritime damage… two people were injured by glass splinters,” Berlin police said on Twitter.

The hotel and nearby streets were flooded, and guests were moved out of the Radisson. Berlin’s public transport authority said the street outside the hotel was closed off because of “an extreme amount of water on the road”.

Videos and images posted to Twitter revealed the damage to the AquaDom aquarium.

AquaDom is located at the entrance to Sea Life Berlin. On the AquaDom and Sea Life Berlin website, a statement reads: “Due to the recently reported incident in regards to the AquaDom, Sea Life Berlin is unfortunately temporarily closed.

“We ask for your understanding and will announce as soon as we are open again.”

The Radisson said (via Sky News): “The aquarium of the AquaDom Berlin which is located in the Radisson Collection hotel, Berlin, collapsed.

“As far as we know to date, no guests were injured and together with the authorities we are looking into the cause of the incident.

“We have immediately closed the hotel until further notice and are relocating guests.”

AquaDom opened in December 2003.
