Parques Reunidos will combine technology, education and environmental awareness at Atlantis Aquarium, which opens in Madrid.

The Atlantis Aquarium opens in Madrid Xanadú, a shopping mall. It will be the first aquarium in Spain to be free of single-use plastics, and hopes to educate the public about the threat affecting marine biodiversity and the whole food chain.

The aquarium has an area of 6,000m2 and a capacity of more than 2,300,000 liters of water, and offers guided visits to schoolchildren and families. Cutting-edge technology will allow interactivity through games and challenges.

Atlantis Aquarium takes visitors on an immersive journey beginning when a meteorite crashes into Madrid, with a message from the future warning about the consequences of climate change.

Technology at the aquarium includes virtual reality and augmented reality, as well as interactive screens and challenges.

Atlantis Aquarium will be a future member of AIZA (Iberian Association of Zoos and Aquariums).

Parques Reunidos announced revenue of €583.1 million in the fiscal year 2018, as well as a number of investments for the new year.

It was a record year for the company’s operations in Spain, with strong attendance boosting revenue by 4%. The rest of Europe also performed strongly. In the US revenue grew 0.6%, after performance was negatively impacted by adverse weather conditions

The company is currently developing four expansion projects for 2019, representing a total investment of €70 million.

The company will open Nickelodeon Adventure in the Xanadu mall before the end of the year.
