Building Museums is an annual international symposium created, produced, and managed by MAAM. The 2026 edition will explore three interconnected themes: Vision, Implementation, and Sustainability (or Life after Opening).

The event is open to everyone interested in this vital topic and welcomes architects, museum leaders, planners, project managers, technical experts, and all those who plan or implement new construction, renovation, or expansion projects for museums.

Its content will reflect institutions of all sizes, from historic sites to children's museums and art galleries, whether undergoing renovation, expansion, or the construction of new facilities.

Founded in 1947, MAAM is a not-for-profit membership organisation representing museum professionals, organisations, institutions, museum service providers, and industry partners in Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

It works to enhance the image of museums, educate individuals about a range of field-specific studies and programmes, and foster dialogue among sector professionals to support sustainable and inclusive museums for their communities.

The organisation brings together the Mid-Atlantic’s museum community's resources and makes them available to its members through conferences, symposia, and workshops. Its programming is designed to meet the sector’s needs and includes two major events each year.

Recently, MAAM revealed the recipients of its 2025 awards, which recognise excellence in the museum sector. The winners were celebrated at an award ceremony during MAAM's Annual Conference, which took place in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, from 28 to 30 October.

The conference gathered museum leaders, educators, curators, and innovators to connect, learn, and explore the key issues shaping the future of museums.
