Musealia, a global leader in the creation of touring exhibitions, is set to open The Berlin Wall: A World Divided at Union Station, Kansas City, on 29 May, marking the exhibition's North American debut.
Berlin stood as the Cold War's frontline, where the global ideological conflict became visible, tangible, and everyday.
Yet the Cold War was not limited to Europe; it was a shared worldwide experience that extended across oceans, entering homes, classrooms, and public awareness.
In North America, it shaped an entire generation and remains a collective memory for Americans who grew up in its shadow.
With The Berlin Wall: A World Divided, this shared history is presented as an impactful 90-minute journey that includes over 200 original exhibits, authentic fragments of the Berlin Wall, and firsthand testimonies from both sides of the Iron Curtain.
Many guests will recognise parts of their own past, from the fear of nuclear escalation to the era's political polarisation to the feeling of living under constant uncertainty.
Civil defence materials, propaganda, and Cold War-era objects reveal the extent to which the conflict shaped everyday life in the US and in Berlin, and bring visitors face to face with questions that remain as urgent today as they were then.
What would I have done? How far would I go for freedom?

Personal connections
Through immersive storytelling and human-centred narratives, the exhibition examines life under division. In East and West Berlin, every day was shaped by surveillance, propaganda, restricted movement, and political pressure.
Families were separated overnight, and citizens were forced into silence, resistance, or escape. Lives were defined by an uncrossable border.

The Berlin Wall: A World Divided
The Berlin Wall remains deeply relevant 30 years after its fall. Issues of democracy, division, borders, surveillance, and freedom continue to define public debate across the globe, including in the US.
With this North American premiere, The Berlin Wall: A World Divided presents audiences with an opportunity to step inside history rather than simply observe it.
This is a journey into the Cold War that allows guests to feel its weight, confront its realities, and consider its consequences.
The story of the Berlin Wall goes beyond history. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of a world divided and highlights what is at stake when it comes together again.
Attendees at the American Alliance of Museums Annual Meeting & MuseumExpo in Philadelphia can find Musealia at Booth 323 and find out how The Berlin Wall: A World Divided can bring this powerful story to their own location.
Last month, Musealia announced that Auschwitz. Not Long Ago. Not Far Away., created with the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum, will be free for visitors to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum (USHMM) and will run for two and a half years.
