dan pearlman, a leading brand and experience architecture group, has detailed plans for a new conservation-led design project on the North Coast of Germany.
Zoo am Meer Bremerhaven (which translates as Zoo next to the Sea), was completely revamped between 2001 to 2004, and later expanded to include the North Sea Aquarium in 2013. The site is set to again be redeveloped with a major installation in the coming years.
Biodom Bremerhaven is a long-term development designed to promote biodiversity and its role in society in a guest-friendly environment. Biodom is an extension to the site found near the zoo on the west side of the adjacent New Harbour.
The city of Bremerhaven is working with Städtische Grundstücksgesellschaft Bremerhaven, the zoo’s owner to realise the Biodom project. Irish-born CEO and creative director Kieran Stanley has led a team of architects from dan pearlman Experience Architecture, to design the Biodom concept.
Exploring diversity
At the centre of Biodom Bremerhavenlies lies a sprawling representation of the Amazon rainforest ecosystem.
Animals will be used to help explain deeper concepts such as genetic or functional diversity. Other areas include Klimahaus Bremerhaven 8° Ost, which explores climate change, and Deutsches Auswandererhaus, an exhibit on migration.
The state-of-the-art facility will allow for the communal keeping of different animal species, fostering direct and emotional experiences for visitors.
After visiting the Biodom Bremerhaven, they will understand themselves as part of the fascinating, fragile ecosystem of the earth. dan pearlman says that this deep exploration of the human contribution to the fragile ecosystem of the earth is not comparable to any experience presently found in Europe.
A company representative says: “The Biodom Bremerhaven is a perfect complement to the existing zoo and seems more important than ever due to the rapidly progressing loss of biodiversity. Nevertheless, in view of many other important issues in our society, it remains to be seen to what extent and when the vision of the Biodom in Bremerhaven can be realised.”
dan pearlman was recently announced as part of a project team which will collaborate with The Giant Company on future projects.
