Leading the Met has been an extraordinary honor,” Weiss said in a statement.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art‘s president and chief executive officer Daniel Weiss is set to step down from his position in June 2023.

Weiss has served as the Met’s president, and as president and CEO since 2017. During his tenure, he guided the Met through a major reorganisation of its finances, as well as the Covid-19 pandemic.

He also hired the museum’s first-ever chief diversity officer, and led a process that resulted in the Met and the Sackler family agreeing to remove the Sackler name from seven spaces in the building.

“Leading the Met has been an extraordinary honor,” Weiss said. “The museum is an intergenerational institution in service to the world, and I have felt that profoundly from my first day here.”

“Throughout my years at the Met, I have benefited from the support of our exceptional staff, and I have learned from them every day,” he added.

“Having just completed our five-year strategic plan with my colleague and partner, director Max Hollein, next year will be the right time for a leadership transition. I have every confidence that the museum is on a path to a strong future.”

Major projects completed during Weiss’ time at the museum include the $150 million replacement of skylights over the European paintings galleries – the largest infrastructure project in the Met’s history.

The Met is now reconstructing and reimagining the Michael C. Rockefeller Wing, renovating the Ancient Near Eastern and Cypriot galleries, and renovating the modern and contemporary art wing.

Weiss has been president and CEO since 2017

The museum recently selected Mexican architect Frida Escobedo to design its new $500m wing after receiving a $125m gift from Oscar Tang and Agnes Hsu-Tan.

“Dan Weiss has transformed the Met,” said board of trustees co-chairs Candace Beinecke and Tony James.

“His vision, commitment to mission, and ability to inspire the large and diverse team of Met colleagues are exemplary, and the results speak loudly for themselves.”

“Dan has led the museum through unprecedented times,” said Hollein. “He has been an extraordinary partner, whose wisdom and judgment have set an example for us all.”

The Met showcases tens of thousands of objects covering 5,000 years of art. The museum has two sites in New York City – the Met Fifth Avenue and the Met Cloisters.
