Guests will get to draw their own sea creatures, which come to life in a virtual aquarium.

The Newark Museum of Art is opening a digital aquarium installation created by teamLab as part of its upcoming Animal Kingdom exhibition.

On view from 23 September 2022, Animal Kingdom is an interactive exhibition featuring animal specimens, artworks, digital experiences and immersive spaces.

In the teamLab installation, called Sketch Aquarium: Connected World, visitors will be able to draw their own sea creatures, which come to life and swim in a virtual aquarium.

“I’m thrilled to see this dynamic approach bring a sense of new life and appreciation for nature to the museum,” said Linda C. Harrison, director and CEO of the Newark Museum of Art.

“Our hope is that these interactive experiences underscore to our beloved visitors and members that we are never too young or old to learn about the precious gifts that our planet holds.”

Additional interactive elements include a game where guests match animals to ancient cave drawings, as well as a digital recreation of three ecosystems.

Animal Kingdom will be on view through May 2024. Founded in 1909, the Newark Museum of Art is the largest arts and education institution in New Jersey.

teamLab‘s permanent exhibitions and museums include teamLab Borderless and teamLab Planets in Tokyo, teamLab Borderless Shanghai, and teamLab SuperNature Macao.

teamLab Borderless is set to relocate from Tokyo’s Odaiba waterfront to the Toranomon-Azabudai Project, the city’s new urban village. It is due to open in 2023.

Earlier this year, teamLab revealed the design for teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi, a new permanent attraction on Saadiyat Island.
