Legoland Shanghai has welcomed more than two million visitors in its first year of opening, setting a record for first-year attendance at a Legoland resort globally.

The resort, which celebrated its first anniversary on 5 July, is enjoying a steady rise in repeat visits and an above-expectation annual pass base, Merlin Entertainments said in a press release.

"Legoland Shanghai delivered a very strong first year, ranking the top in both visitor numbers and guests satisfaction among Legoland resorts globally," said John Jakobsen, chief strategic portfolio development officer at Merlin.

"This not only confirms the huge potential of China's family market, but also gives us strong confidence in the vitality of China's cultural tourism market," he added.

"China represents a key pillar of our Merlin Entertainments growth strategy. Going forward, we will deliver even richer play experiences to Chinese families."

Spanning 318,000 square metres, the theme park features eight lands with more than 75 rides, shows and attractions, as well as thousands of Lego models built from more than 85 million bricks.

Legoland Shanghai is contributing to the local economy, with 20 percent of its employees living in Jinshan, driving direct and indirect job creation in the area.

The resort is also attracting more guests to Jinshan, boosting attendance and revenue at nearby hotels, restaurants and more.

"Legoland Shanghai's first-year achievements would not have been possible without every employee, every partner, and most importantly, every family who traveled from near and far to visit us," said Jeanette Chen, general manager of Legoland Shanghai.

"We look forward to bringing Lego's creativity and joy to life right here, growing together with Jinshan, bringing every family closer through play."
