Planning permission has been granted to build a new £300 million leisure and tourism destination in Merthyr Tydfil, Wales.

Approved by Merthyr Tydfil's council on 7 January, the Rhydycar West project includes the UK's longest ski slope, a water park, and hotel accommodation.

Council leader Brent Carter said: "Rhydycar West is without doubt groundbreaking and a complete game changer for Merthyr Tydfil, complementing the offerings of Bike Park Wales, Zip World and Rock UK-Climbing Centre.

“This project will massively support and boost our economy and offer multiple opportunities for our future generations," he added.

“The amount of support for Rhydycar West has been truly overwhelming. I for one am thrilled."

The development will be anchored by the UK's longest indoor snow centre at around 400 metres, also offering a tropical-themed water park, indoor and outdoor activity centres, and hotel accommodation and woodland lodges.

Ali Tyebkhan, CEO of Rhydycar West, said: "This is an amazing moment. It marks the culmination of many years of hard work as well as patience.

"Thank you to all our team, partners, supporters and the local community – we could not have done this without your ongoing support over the years.

"We are very excited and looking forward to the next stages of work and delivery of the development."

The project is expected to generate significant economic and social benefits, including new jobs, increased tourism, and opportunities for local businesses.

Via Wales Online, construction on Rhydycar West is expected to start in 2027, with the resort scheduled to open in 2030.

Elsewhere, Australia's Winter Sports World development has partnered with Bonski, one of China’s leading indoor snow sports operators.
