Floriade, the International Horticultural Exhibition, has announced that the King of the Netherlands will open the event later this month, which features 400 participants from 33 countries, showcasing advances in horticulture and sustainability.
Floriade is an expansive celebration that takes place each decade. This year, it features the theme ‘Growing Green Cities’, focusing on making environments more enjoyable, liveable and sustainable.
A specially created sixty-acre site will host the 7th Floriade, an event that has been organised in cooperation with Nederlandse Tuinbouwraad (NTR), the Netherlands government, the Provincial Government of Flevoland and the Municipality of Almere.
Green highlights
The Floriade park is based on an arboretum designed by landscape architect Winy Maas. The installation features an alphabetically ordered collection of bulbs, perennials, shrubs and trees for visitors to walk through and enjoy.
The government’s pavilion, the Dutch Innovation Experience, looks at the potential of sustainable, circular housing construction. The pavilion itself was built from carefully sourced bio-based materials ranging from traditional materials such as timber, rubber and straw, to reeds, cattails, paprika stems and mycelium.

The Green House will showcase the story behind flowers, plants, vegetables and fruits, and what they mean for society as a whole and on an individual level. Crop cultivation using innovations including drones, robots and vertical horticulture will be showcased.
Amsterdam and Almere’s ‘The Voice of Urban Nature’ pavilion, hosted by Amsterdam and Almere, illustrates how the countries are working to create green cities of the future. Floriade 2022 will also feature an extensive art and culture programme, with prominent features such as M. -Flevoland’s pavilion for immersive art.
Floriade will also be home to ornamental displays and pavilions from various African, American, Asian and European countries. The site is accessible via sustainable transport methods including cable cars and is largely traversable by foot. International travellers will find the exhibition grounds are a short commute from Amsterdam.
Once Floriade Expo 2022 concludes, the site will be converted into a one-of-a-kind urban district with an emphasis on low traffic and green spaces.
Floriade 2022 takes place until 9 October 2022 and tickets are available on the organiser’s website.
A giant clock has been counting down the days to the opening event in the city centre of Almere, in anticipation of the popular event.
