The Ocean Project announces World Ocean Day 2022

News
World Ocean Day 2022

Events will be happening across the globe on 8 June

The Ocean Project, the largest network advancing ocean conservation around the world, is preparing for this year’s World Ocean Day, which takes place on 8 June. This is a day where people around the globe can commemorate and celebrate the ocean, and is also an opportunity to take collective action.

While the annual event focuses people’s energy on the importance of our blue planet, actions also take place throughout the year, as individuals, organizations, schools, businesses, and communities take action to protect and restore the ocean.

People can share what they are doing with the global community by listing their events on the website and also by tagging the Ocean Project team on social media.

Taking action for the ocean

On the website, there is a World Ocean Day Events Calendar and World Map which is searchable so that people can find out what is going on near them. Events are being added each day in the run-up to World Ocean Day. They can also share an event, activity, or conservation-related announcement with the world by submitting it here

To help those planning events, the website also features a range of new and updated resources, including an event planning toolkit, a social media toolkit, 30×30 action materials, cleanup how-to guides, materials for kids, and much more.

For the third year running, the World Ocean Day Conservation Action Focus is to support the growing momentum for a global commitment to “30×30”: “Protect at least 30% of our lands, waters, and ocean by 2030 to create a healthy ocean with abundant wildlife and help stabilize the climate.”

The organisation says:

“We support any type of involvement around World Ocean Day, and strongly encourage integrating the 30×30 action and youth engagement whenever possible. However you are celebrating and honouring our ocean now, in June, and throughout the year – thank you and know that World Ocean Day is here to support your efforts!”

Last year’s event saw several in-person and virtual activities taking place around the world.
